Open innovation has received significant company consideration as a way of supplying companies in hyper-competitive environments together with the capability to generate a stream of new products and services.
For innovation that is open, organizing outside sources accurately is a crucial capability; current literature indicates that external sources needs to be organized either as collaborative communities or as marketplaces that are competitive. While businesses have typically been slow to adopt open innovation, many cities in the U.S. and Europe have been quick to embrace it--supplying needed field-based experience on how to organize outside sources.
Predicated on our evaluation of six cities opening their information for innovation, we discovered that while cities frequently started with one or another approach to arranging their outside sources, each approach was insufficient in ways that could possibly be dealt with by the addition of another approach. Therefore, we conclude with the integrated strategy where the needs of the entire ecosystem of sources and supporters of innovation are coordinated to address both community and competitive needs.
