GDP per capita in Northern Italy overtook the average income in the UK, France and Germany in the 1970s, but the income in southern Italy (Mezzogiorno) has fallen far behind. This was partly due to the cultural and social differences that of the Renaissance, but even more obvious in the northern domination of the new state in 1860 and mafia domination much of the south. This case focuses on the 50 years of effort to correct this problem.
