Central to the work of managers and professionals are tasks that entail harm to one of the parties to benefit or advance value and worthy goals. Sometimes a person must, as part of his or her perform an action that causes emotional, financial or physical harm to another person in the service of achieving the greater good or purpose. Examples include management of firing people, putting people providing bad news, providing negative feedback performance, and, in medicine, performing a painful procedure. Through a series of introspective questions, alternating small group discussions and ending with large group discussion of insights, students and practitioners are better equipped to meet the challenges of a necessary evil.
