“Miracle on the Hudson” (A): Landing U.S. Airways Flight 1549 Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

On January 15, 2009, just after takeoff from LaGuardia Airport, a flock of Canada geese struck. The geese were then sucked into the twin engines of the airplane, causing the loss of power and also overall engine failure. Instance A of this three-part series recounts how over the subsequent four minutes, Flight 1549's Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger and First Officer Jeffrey Skiles grappled with various extreme challenges.

Not only did they need to keep the plane in check, besides they also had to choose whether they could make an emergency landing at a nearby airport without any further delay  - or locate another choice to get the plane down safely in one of the very crowded regions in the state. Cases B and C then describe how, after the plane landed in the chilly waters of the Hudson River, emergency responders from many agencies and private organizations - converging on the scene without a prior action plan for this sort of crisis - scrambled to both saving passengers and crew and stabilize the aircraft as it started to move downstream.
