Miles Everson, a partner at the PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), is the Global Engagement Partner (GEP) for a big U.S. financial institution and about to take over this function for a considerably larger international financial institution. The GEP role is a serious one at PwC. GEPs have liability for the biggest and most important customers of the business. They must handle an equally vast internal network of the employees of the firm and a vast outside network of client employees. The GEP needs to have a deep comprehension of its industry and the customer in order to identify opportunities and issues where the company’s resources can be brought to bear and to match the firm’s abilities to the customer’s requirements. GEPs must be able to concurrently administer a bigger number of jobs, often under great time pressure. This case describes how a quite powerful GEP-Miles Everson, who was named one of the top 25 advisers for 2006 by Consulting magazine-performs this function and provides insights into the approaches, abilities, and subject matter expertise needed to become successful in this job. Both customer and PwC personnel provide insights into Everson does this occupation. As is commonly the case, Everson is responsible for a business (in his case Governance, Risk, and Compliance), and so he has considerable internal management responsibilities too.
The case raises questions about whether he’ll be able to keep these internal management duties when he takes over a considerably larger and more complex international client and becomes the Senior Engagement Partner (SEP) on his current customer. (SEPs perform an oversight function for the work being done by the GEP and his or her team and are usually very senior members of the company.) The case also increases places where Everson can improve.
