Through a series of mergers, Ivan Seidenberg, Verizon's chairman and chief executive officer, successfully separated from the director title twice during the construction of the largest telecommunications company in the United States. Strong cultures and additional companies that Seidenberg and a core group of leaders merged was a major factor in their success. However, in the steps leading up to this, reduced income in the traditional wireline business increased their dependence on the growth of wireless and broadband services.
