It is August 2000, and Maitri AIDS hospice in San Francisco reconsidering its approach to fundraising. In recent years, Maitri has been increasingly relying on government, corporate and philanthropic foundations. However, Don Spradlin, deputy director of Maitri for private gifts, who was hired in early 1999 to focus on individual donations and special events, has made some progress in increasing the number of individual donors over the past year and a half. He opened two new earned income strategies, each of which attracted new donors and positive publicity for Maitri. However, individual contributions will continue to account for only 8% of annual operating costs, and Spradlin struggling with defining their goals and individual donors in the traditional grass-roots organizations.
