Much of the landscape in which today's media companies are, as they say, with the consequences of content digitization and convergence of the distribution of funds was established regulatory forces. Three decisions of the government, in particular, have been influential: Consent Decree of 1948 (often referred to as "Paramount Case"), the financial interest and syndication ruling (also called "FinSyn" ruling in 1970 the United States Federal Communications Commission), and the United States Supreme Court ruling in Universal City Studios, et al. (Including Disney) compared with Sony Corp (also known as in the case of Betamax in 1984). These regulatory forces broke up a rigid vertical integration of production and distribution of content (Paramount case and FinSyn Order) or helped to pave the way for the introduction of new technologies for distribution (Betamax case).
