This article examines the strategies pursued licensing companies whose business model is based on the development and licensing of intellectual property. These "intellectual property (IP) vendors" are not traditional suppliers, as they are not involved in the production or commercialization, but specialize exclusively in the generation of IP. Considerable anecdotal evidence exists about these creative and entrepreneurial firms. Nevertheless, no systematic studies about how they use licensing to capture value from their IP. Our research shows that their licensing strategies can be differentiated into two main dimensions. first concerns the nature of the contractual relationship: is the license stands alone, or whether it is part of a large package, including other R & D cooperation agreements. second concerns whether appropriate technologies are high or low cumulative.
