This two-part case study describes the first merger and ethnic transformation of Aviva's Norwich Union (NUI) business in the United Kingdom. Instance A describes how, after Norwich Union and CGU Plc joined forces to become NUI, top management's priority was to restore profits. Behind the scenes, however, the demand for a whole new corporate culture was becoming imperative. It shows the tension between the need for immediate increases in efficiencies vs. longer-term approaches to the business that needed careful nurturing and focus.
Case B describes successfully execute the new philosophy and the activities taken to overcome their skepticism - activities that necessitated major change to the organisational culture.
