This two-part case study describes the initial amalgamation and cultural transformation of Aviva's Norwich Union (NUI) operation in the United Kingdom. Case A describes how, after CGU Plc and Norwich Union joined forces to become NUI, top management's priority was to restore gains. Behind the scenes, however, the demand for a whole new corporate culture was becoming increasingly critical. It shows the tension between the demand for immediate increases in efficiencies vs. longer-term strategies to the company that demanded careful nurturing and focus.
It ends as the executive team's statement of the new corporate philosophy - "to be a service provider with insurance at our center and care at our heart" - is met with complete incredulity by workers. Case B describes successfully implement the new philosophy and the actions taken to overcome their skepticism - activities that required major change to the organisational culture.
