Active in more than 75 countries, Lafarge is the world leader in the manufacture of building materials. Lafarge was founded in 1833 as the manufacturing of lime operations in France. In its two centuries of existence, Lafarge diversified to provide many construction materials, including cement, aggregates and concrete, gypsum and roofing. The company has a long history of growth through mergers and acquisitions of other companies supplying the building. This video captures the discussion between Dr. Bruce McKern, director of the Sloan Master and instructor at the GSB, and Frederick Rapier, Director of Corporate Projects Lafarge. Rapier was responsible for negotiating the acquisition of Lafarge Construction Romanian Romcim solids. He discusses in detail the basis of negotiations with the Government of Romania and the questions Lafarge occur as soon as he took control Romcim operations. Issues referred old equipment, excessive number of employees, and the lack of modern management practices and focus on profitability. Rapier explains how Lafarge successfully address these issues in the framework of the modernization of factories, workforce reductions, export diversification and the development of the Romanian leadership.
