Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Ltd: The Sun Sets on Its Mining Operations Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

Kudremukh is a magnificent mountain range in the Chickamagalur District, Karnataka, India. Three rivers form an important lifeline for South India and originate here; ecologically very sensitive. The National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC) conducted prospecting surveys in 1967 and obtained a mining permit from the authorities of Karnataka for an region of 5218 hectares. In the year 1969, the government of India float a public-sector responsibility, the Kudremukh Iron Ore Company (KIOCL), and NMDC turned over its 30-year mining lease to KIOCL. The majority of the surrounding communities were anxious about the possible impact of mining operations that are gigantic in the virgin forest region. KIOCL's mining activities boomed, making it into Asia's largest mining and pelletization company.

The place let to KIOCL was an enclave within the southern half of the national park with wildlife conservationists and ecosystem protection organizations staging rallies and agitations against KIOCL's operations, and the mining operations began witnessing resistance in 1995. Numerous requests filed in the Supreme Court, asking the court in order to shield Kudremukh from the ravages of mining to end the activities of KIOCL. The case centers on significant problems regarding stockholder vs. stakeholder responsibility in the context of continuing ecological degradation, increased environmental awareness in Indian society, and consequent changes in laws.
