June 25, 1950, U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Korea received a disturbing call from his deputy chief, EF Drumright, warning him that the Communists were beaten on the front. The invasion caught the Republic of Korea and his American colleagues by surprise. This case chronicles the events that took place immediately after the invasion of North Korea from the 38th parallel. It examines the strategic decisions that were made in this period, with emphasis on the ways in which the State Department had to deal with the attack and subsequent conflicts for most of Korea. Part looks at these events in detail and includes excerpts from the memoirs recalling events of President Truman. Part B provides more detailed information on the events in Manchuria and the Rhineland. It also explains the role of China, Ethiopia, Spain, Austria and Czechoslovakia.
