Introduction:
In 2007, London Health Science Centre (LHSC) launched a program by the name of “Just Clean Your Hands” where its purpose was to improve the hygiene of all the people involved in the hospital. There had been conducted a survey from the year 1840 whereit was found that around 25% of the women died after delivering babies by the illness of “childbed fever.”.Dr. Ignaz Semmelweis, one of the assistants in the maternity ward, noted that the medical students who assist in the delivery of the baby did not properly wash their hands. This led to various infections or sometimes death to the patients.
Many of the patients admitted tohospitals or visitors often became sick due to the infections which were spread. These infections were called healthcareassociated infections (HAI). InCanada, around 250,000 patients picked up different infections while being treated for something else and around 8,000 of them died. The reason for these infections wasmainly because the people who came in contact with the patients were nurses, visitors, physicians and others who did not properly wash their hands before coming in contact with the patients.
Just Clean Your Hands Harvard Case Solution & Analysis
LHSC launched the program “Just Clean Your Hands” that requiredthe people to properly wash their hands before coming in contact with the patients. The procedure was that hands need to be washed by the use of soap which was made from alcohol to clean away the impurities. The soap was in the form of aliquid which needed to be applied on hands and properly rubbed for almost 15 seconds. The program launched by LHSC showed tremendous improvement in the washing of hands. On its Moment 1 compliance,it had moved from 13 % in the year 2008 to 74% in 2010. This resulted in less sickness to the people who were either admitted to the hospital or those who visited the hospital.
Problem Statement:
The program launched by the LHSC showed good results in the washing of hands and caused areduction in the HAI. LHSC program’s purpose was to cover all the people involved in the hospital by having a 100% compliance but the program was unable to achieve thiscompliance. It had around 20 to 30 % of noncompliance.
The factors which led to noncompliance were mainly due to workload, too much washing of hands could lead to irritations, locations of the sink were inconvenient, religious beliefs that prevented the use of alcohol soaps and some staff members were not following the program.
Analysis:
The most appropriate tool which would help in analyzing the case would be the use of the tool SWOT which is strength, weakness, opportunity, and threat. This would help in understanding the program “Just Clean Your Hands” launched by LHSC in depth as what is the strength and how it can help in availing the opportunity of the program and overcoming the weakness in order to improve the compliance rate of the program.......................
