In January 2011, senior officials of the Indonesian been contemplating a new study trip, which showed that the number of visits to the metropolitan district of Jakarta is steadily increasing, while the share of trips by public transport fell faster. Jakarta has a reputation as one of the busiest cities in the world, and the situation is getting worse because the population and average income in the metropolitan area have been growing rapidly. This case is designed for use in the course or executive program, which deals with the challenges facing fast growing cities in developing countries. It is designed to illustrate the various causes of congestion in cities like Jakarta and to encourage participants to think about the advantages and disadvantages of alternative strategies.
