In January 2011 senior Indonesian officials were contemplating the results of a fresh travel survey that demonstrated that the variety of excursions in the Jakarta metropolitan area was growing while the share of trips made on public transportation was dropping quickly. Jakarta had a reputation as one of the world's most congested cities, as well as the situation was getting worse since the citizenry and average incomes in the metropolitan area were growing quickly.
