J-TRADING is a US-based arm of a Japanese keiretsu that is focused on commodity trading between the North and East America counting about 350 workers in the USA. It has experienced difficulties with its information technology (IT) infrastructure and help desk functions. IT workers were not inspired to work on these fairly everyday tasks leading to price and quality problems. J-TRADING CIO decided to solve the issue by outsourcing both functions.
The case relays J-TRADING's outsourcing journey through its ups and downs discussing the process of vendor assessment and selection, task transition, relationship management, and company results. The case asks pupils to evaluate vendor choice as well as the sourcing choice itself and governance procedures and provides complete financial details crucial for fiscal investigation.
