Innovation in Megaprojects: Systems Integration at London Heathrow Terminal 5 Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

Mega-projects requiring investment of $ 1 billion or more to build the infrastructure, usually involving complex production system, consisting of discrete, routine, and a large amount of repetitive processes. Many of these processes can be gradually standardized and replicated to improve the overall productive activities. This article presents the results of research on the development and production of London's Heathrow Airport Terminal 5 (T5). The results were used to develop a conceptual framework, which we call a model for integration of the project identification and operational processes that contribute to the success of the implementation of mega-projects. Systems Integrator is the leading organization in the mega-project, responsible for the establishment of the management structure, risk management, and coordination of processes on a large network of external suppliers. Innovation based on the "recombination" and "replication" process can be introduced to improve the performance of the mega-project. "Hide
