Problem Identification

A team for research and consultancy was led by IBM in order to leverage organizational knowledge at Ontario Ministry of Education.The fact that database of the department was not well maintained, was a major concern for the company. The data stored in the electronic machines was not reliable due to several mistakes in it. Thus, it caused the employees to get the access to the past practices of the forum. Moreover, there were up to 20% of the document versions in the database and the same documents were stored in the multiple hard drives. There was ahuge security issue for the database of Knowledge-Based forum because it largely depends upon the information gathering and information sharing from different web sites for the purpose of knowledge. The database also contains approximately 3 million documents in the hard drive of forum.  Moreover, the EDU was divided into several branches and units due to which coordination and knowledge sharing became highly difficult for the employees. In addition to this, it was also difficult for the management to identify the employees with particular expertise and much of the knowledge in the organization was tactic, which was difficult to manage. On the other hand, the significant cultural issues made knowledge sharing in the organization a complex procedure, which it has to resolve. The team also identified that the knowledge sharing infrastructure was weak, which resulted in the duplication of efforts.

The procurement of from the suppliers is high in numbers and substitute input is also in very large numbers; hence, it is expected that the bargaining power of suppliers is low in the industry.

Threat of Substitute of the Product

The customers will have to bear a high cost if they switch. Moreover, product differentiation allows customers to move to other companies. However, the substitutes cannot achieve benchmark of achieving IBM’s standard hence, threat of the substitute to the product is low.

Threat of existing Competitors

Industry involves innovations in the market and segment is divesting saturated. Furthermore, learning curve for the industry is steep. Hence, threat of existing competitors in the industry is medium.

Threat of New Entrants

Patent limitation in the industry is amajor limitation for any of the new entrants to the market. Moreover, advanced technology and innovation wants capital intensiveness for the newly emerged entrants. However, IBM has the advantage of being the first mover in the industry.
