One stock particularly, Hubei Lantian Co., Ltd. (Hubei Lantian), grabbed Emily's focus as a likely purchase recommendation. Emily felt she needed to look deeper in the organization 's operating performance and financial condition, before making her recommendation decision. To this end, Emily performed a financial ratio analysis comparison of Hubei Lantian's financial ratios to those of selected peer firms. Hubei Lantian's important revenue sources were aquatic products (fish, ducks) and drinks (lotus root juice, mineral water).
Directed by these revenue sources, Emily chosen the financial statements of four businesses in the fishery industry and three companies in the drink and food industry to do a peer business relative financial ratio analysis. The instance replicates the individual business financial ratios Emily. The student's task is whatever insights they could develop from the case data to evaluate the individual and comparative performance, financial condition, and quality of gains of Hubei Lantian and to use these ratios. At the conclusion of the course, students are requested to make a stock recommendation.
