The chance of working virtually is swiftly moving from the domain of science fiction to reality. Even though as the businesses increasingly move toward virtualizing work processes, the authors find that digitally mediated relationships can give rise to as many problems as solutions. This article argues with different forms of the impact that various forms of virtual work can have on organizational processes and structures and virtual work arrangements which exist now.
Taking an example from the U.S. automobile industry, the authors highlight how a conventional industry must come to terms with the new organizational challenges occasioned by today's digitally mediated relationships. This case offers education and cautionary guidance for other organizations that would turn in the hope of reducing costs by replacing individuals and things with portrayals and info to the virtual.
