Dr. John Niff, cochair of the Medical Advisory Panel (MAP) to Hillside Hospital, waited for his co-workers to join him to review the recommendations for The New Hillside Hospital that the panel had developed over the previous six months. When Bill Hurst, Hillside's CEO, had first suggested creating a committee of doctors (the MAP) to develop recommendations for clinical systems at the hospital, Niff was doubtful. But as the clinicians worked together to identify issues and establish priorities, they acquired a greater appreciation as well as their management abilities for the challenges confronting the hospital.
Trust between management and doctors grew as the hospital executed some of the panel's recommendations. Although the MAP's list of recommendations had not yet been officially accepted by the Board, all participants reflected about the benefits already gained through this procedure.
