On June 5, 2013, a London paper reported the United States National Security Agency (NSA) was collecting the phone records of millions of Verizon clientele in the U.S. The story was the first of several top secret disclosures about the NSA's spying plans, leaked by Edward Snowden, a former NSA contractor. The case assesses Snowden's actions and motivations and asks pupils to consider the repercussions of whistleblowing/leaking on the people, the U.S. government, the NSA and Snowden himself.
