Gladiator: Leisure Theme Anaylysis Case Solution
The main leisure theme reflected in this story is when Maximus started fighting as a gladiator. As a gladiator, Maximus started practicing his skills which he applied during the wars as a General. Instead of wasting his talent as a slave, Maximus had to recreate himself from the ashes and to prepare himself to take his revenge. After fighting as a gladiator, Maximus started earning respect which helped him to foresee that one day he will be able to take his revenge from Commodus. His intrinsic motivation is the main theme of subjective leisure whereas the plot has many sub themes such as; winning the battle of Carthage against the strongest force of “Scipio Africanus Legions”. By winning all of these small battles Maximus moved a step towards achieving his ultimate goal which was revenge. During these battles, Maximus hid his identity and earned a lot of fame which grabbed Commodus’ attention and one day he came into the arena to meet Maximus but to his surprise he found out that the man who had been hiding his identity was none other than Maximus. During that moment, Maximus revealed in-front of the crowd that he was Ex-General and a true servant of Roman Empire and that he is destined to kill Commodus.
The presence of Maximus shocked Commodus because he commanded his guards to kill Maximus a long time ago. Lucilla was also happy to see Maximus back as she had been in a relationship with him.
After this meeting, Commodus decided to kill Maximus in the arena with the help of the undefeated gladiators in the Rome who were called “Tigris of Gaul”. The audiences were very excited to watch the most interesting fight of the season. Since Maximus had been practicing his skills while he was away from Rome therefore it helped him to win the most difficult battle that ever took place. Commodus got very angry because he failed to kill Maximus therefore he prepared a plan and captured Maximus again. He then planned a fight with Maximus but somehow Maximus won the fight and killed Commodus. After killing Commodus he also died at the same ground as he was deeply wounded. Lucilla retold everyone that Maximus was a great fighter and a loyal servant of Rome. He was buried by his friend Juba who was proclaiming that he would meet him in the life hereafter.
Conclusion:
Maximus was a great fighter and a gladiator who spent part of his life as a General in Roman army and as a slave.
