Following the lean years of the Great Depression when insolvency proliferated and financing for new ventures almost dried up, new demand for capital was made in a post-War surroundings of industrial and scientific expansion. Enterprise funding happened more broadly in the USA than it ever had done before.
While the origins of the American venture capital business are longstanding and multifaceted, they may be frequently traced back to the pioneering initiatives of the French General and Harvard Business School professor, Georges Doriot, who created the American Research and Development Corporation (ARD) in 1946.
