President Putin has publicly stated that Gazprom, the largest natural gas producer in the world, was a powerful political arm of the Russian state in the world, and a cornerstone in the foundation of the country's energy security. Thus, Russia's leadership outlined the company's future course of the seemingly inevitable dismemberment, privatization and, as a consequence, de-monopolization of the complex combination of increased state control, professional, transparent governance, and significant expansion. Case studies, as in 2000-2008, Gazprom management strategy pursued policymakers. Impressive expansion strategy Gazprom envisaged diversification of markets, products, transport routes and methods of delivery. Problems were equally formidable: the massive investment needs, the possibility of production deficit, and chronic problems with transit country Ukraine, to name a few.
