Every time Jim Fonner thought about his own company had zigged and zagged, he was prone to laugh. Once employed at Weyerhaeuser, the international paper- and wood-products company, Fonner had left the management ranks to transform himself into something quite different: one half of the Beach Blues Brothers, a duet of singing, dancing and the Hawaiin shirt-clad salesperson selling off patio furniture door to door to Florida resorts.
Ten years subsequently, in Lexington, Virginia, a business was operating in 2007, providing commercial outdoor furniture nationwide. It would not have exactly been a linear progression to the Shenandoah Valley.
