Examined the French pension system and its patterns of institutional characteristics, and some of the critical challenges and opportunities of the French reformers. Like almost any other industrialized country, France, has a large pay-as-you-go public pension system, which begins to run into serious financial problems. The ever-increasing life expectancy, the impending retirement of baby boomers, and the intense public pressure on the lower retirement age are placed great pressure on the existing system. The case emphasizes that in the contemplation of the reform proposals, the French now weigh the two different social issues that may be in conflict - economic growth and economic security.
