Fortis Inc. and the Chalillo Dam Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

Fortis Inc., a firm with interests in various North American electric utilities, is recommending to build the Chalillo dam on the Macal River in Belize, Central America. The dam would promote the economical development of the nation by satisfying the mounting demand for electricity from consumers and trade. The organization thinks the dam is the most viable, most cheap and reputable supply of electricity.

Environmental non-government organizations (ENGOs) counter the project due to the destruction of wild animal and plant life as well as the undesirable downstream impact, and allege there are more feasible and much more economical sources. The case reviews the business's existence in the environmental impact studies, Belize as well as the actions of the ENGOs during 2001. At the beginning of 2002, management is encountered with a choice of whether to go ahead with the job.
