The author reviews the role of IT as a commodity and as to whether it can still be used to provide a strategic advantage. In discussing regulation, outsourcing, corporate relations and dependency on IT, this article points out the argument that it will soon be handled by large corporate utilities. Agreeing that most IT functions can be transferred to utility-style providers, the article suggests that the house corporate computing can still provide a strategic advantage. After reviewing managed IT outsourcing relationship, the author identifies the key aspects of IT, including auditing and reporting and client resources are too important to the success of outsourcing. The author argues that it is better to use these benefits, managers need to accept the fact that he is no different than any other corporate function, instead of putting it in your tank away from other business practices.
