In 2000, FedEx Express and Environmental Protection began a collaboration to develop a new source of generation, delivery trucks to significantly improve fuel efficiency and environmental friendliness. By 2005, the prototypes were developed by Eaton Corp, which supplied a hybrid diesel-electric powertrain, and Freightliner, which is integrated transmission on the chassis of the truck delivery. FedEx test prototypes, and announced that it intends to buy 75 new hybrid vehicles.
