Environmental Remediation - A Problem to Manage Globally or Locally? Case Solution
The case sets out a predicament faced within International Paper (IP) in determining how best to manage a specific set of external obligations and accountability - remediation to remedy previous cases of environmental pollution. Remediation problems are resolved over long time frames because of their regulatory and technical sophistication. The inherent case problem is where both the variety of the future prices and accountability are uncertain how best to handle corporate social responsibilities. In this instance, the amount of remediation problems confronted, the impact of future regulatory inflation and the costs of remediation are unpredictable. Thus by means of this instance pupils find the inherent reasons for conflicts of interests between the various stakeholders and the more extensive internal and external context within which businesses must handle their corporate social and environmental obligations.
