Traditional Approach

In the Traditonal Approach, an employee or the workforce reacts through the elected representatives. In the industry like coal mining and shipbuilding, companies try their best to keep the relations good but sometimes employees may not accept the organizational plan and policies that will result in a serious issue between the management and the employees. For example, the management has come up with the new salary structure that may not sound suitable to the employees, so here the conflict arises. These elected representatives are elected through the internal elections that take place within the organization. If we had a look at last 30 years, these unions or the conventional union that connected the personnel management work has taken a rain check enormously with no viewpoint of a constant re-emergence, although the re-development of service or employment and the latest employee related regulations have almost pushed the employee relations by backing up the management plan.

These bodies are quiet powerful because they are elected through the proper channel and they enjoy tremendous support of the employees because they are the actual representatives who will be negotiating with the management on their behalf. Despite of being powerful, they are bounded with certain organizational policies that make the management of the organization more powerful and give them all the right to take any sort of decision.

Partnership approach

The Partnership Approach is entirely based on the practice of involving the employees of the organization in the decision making. Furthermore, the company asks its employees to participate in drafting along with executing the policies and best possible strategies for the business, but the management retains the rights to manage each and everything and have all sort of rights to take the final decision. This Partnership Approach has many collective benefits, which develop trust between the organization and its employees (Johnson, 2009, 19-37). In the industry like coal mining and shipbuilding, the use of the Partnership Approach can be really beneficial for an organization because it helps a company to introduce the desired change through the assistance instead of unwanted resistance. It will also result in achieving a competitive edge for an organization because whatever the plan has been drafted to implement is the combine and agreed effort of the employees and the management. It also helps the company to be proactive rather than reactive and gives it the ability to recognize and solve the issue before it turns into problem. Power sharing

In the Power Sharing Aprroach, the employees have been asked to participate in both day to day as well as the strategic decision-making process. This approach is not often practiced by companies in the industry like coal mining and shipbuilding. More often it is not easy for a company to involve it’s employees in day-to-day decision making. Since, daily decision making is a small level operational activity, which doesn’t require a lot of skills so asking employees to come and participate on a daily basis sounds inappropriate for most of the companies (Ogilvie, 2005, 141). In the industry like coal mining and shipbuilding, the daily decision making is usually not a part of the strategic approaches that a company follows, these are very small level decision making that most of the time do not hurts the companies’ over all objectives.
