The Ecobank case is governance in addition to a African strategy/business development case with powerful elements of Human Resources and talent management issues and organizational layout. The case is an inspirational story about several visionary people from 14 West African countries who in 1984 - with limited resources - choose to produce a pan African bank to help the development of Africa. In the month of July 2012 Ecobank was labeled “Poineer Bank in Africa” by the Euromoney for the 2nd year in a row. The instance covers the strategy it has employed in managing rapid growth both organically and through cross border acquisitions, along with the three expansion periods of the bank.
It has an exceptional technique of "acting locally, while being a single bank" which is powerfully imitated in its governance organization and managerial design. And it's above all been phenomenally successful in attracting and developing local talent - possibly the most panic resource of all in Africa. The written case is intentionally quite short, but supported by video interviews with senior Ecobank executives because of this. A total of 86 minutes of video (of which 28 minutes is intended to be watched by pupils before the session) structured in 12 "modules" gives the educator great flexibility in how exactly to make use of the case in course. The video and case modules can be used to demo: strategy and business development in an African context. The best way to handle organic growth and growth during attainment across borders. Human Resources - how to attract, retain and stimulate talent in a rising market. Organizational design as an association grows. Governance issues in emerging markets.
