In the past, most industries are concentrated on the use of technology assets in their products and services. Along with the trend toward open innovation, however, many firms have recently started to actively license of technology. These firms believe licensing of strategic activities, which may include all technology assets, and which goes far beyond the marginal activity of residual technology commercialization. Research compiled for this article shows that the strategic drivers licensing technologies are often more important than generating revenue from licensing.
