In January 1999, William Durden was named the 27th president of his alma mater, Dickinson College. He quickly realized that for most of the 20th century, the community of Dickinson lacked a strong sense of organizational goals. By fall Durden became life and works of Dr. Benjamin Rush, the man responsible for ensuring the college charter in 1783, as an inspiration for the story. After the introduction of Durden and challenges Dickinson case describes the early history of the college and the ideas and achievements of Rush. It then provides students with an overview of the strategic issues that surfaced at Dickinson mid1990s.
