Dr. Elizabeth Harris, Head of the Department of Anesthesiology (DA) in the North Atlantic Hospital (NAH), faces a number of serious problems. Staff satisfaction surveys confirmed his assessment that the department faculty morale was low, ownership and promotion is perceived as opaque and biased against researchers to doctors, and in general, the faculty felt the organization had little interest in their professional development and well-being. NAH instructed career conferences in all divisions of one year before, and Harris felt that this initiative could serve as an important building block for an overall efficiency of the staff and programs of the DA. In the design of the conference DA career initiative, Harris and her team interviewed DA faculty from all promotion tracks and length of service.
