Dealing with the Devil: The Tobacco Control Negotiations of 1997-98 Case Solution
The time period of 1990s was the time ofsharp public criticism of the leading US tobacco firms on the part of several anti-tobacco advocacy groups, who were together called the tobacco control movement. Inside their passion to restrict smoke smoking, it was very common for such groups to vilify tobacco firms on ethical and moral reasons.
This case, based on the novel "Smoke in Their Eyes; Lessons in Movement Leadership from the Tobacco Wars" (Michael Pertschuk, Vanderbilt University Press, 2001), efficiently tells the narrative of the historical behind the scenes tobacco settlement discussions, which involved the attorneys general of several states, private lawyers, tobacco industry representatives, and Myers, as the sole representative of the tobacco control movement. The case, nevertheless, isn't designed as a vehicle for discussion of tobacco problems per se (although it can serve that function) but, instead, for discussion of the dynamics of discussions--specifically, the tough but not unusual situation of Matthew Myers as one who, while trying to invent a compromise, must also find ways not to lose the support of those in his movement who've more extreme perspectives.
