Curled Metal Incorporated has declining sales, but has developed a new merchandise (curled metal pile driver pads) that, in field tests, deliver client advantages that are many times CMI's manufacturing costs. Rajiv Sanwal of the Engineered Products Division of CMI and Joseph Fernandez are responsible for inventing a strategy for the new commodities.
A crucial problem is the price to bill for the pads. The case raises problems of analyzing market potential, aligning cost with business strategy, and the consequences of a cost on development and execution of strategic choices that are integrated.
