This case describes how the company more efficient use of resources and quality of the process in the production process by developing a waste by-product in the new product. The case describes how the CCP cleans production equipment between batches using styrene, which is a costly hazardous waste. Having worked on the minimization of waste in the past 20 years, the CCP believed that this could reduce the use of styrene without risking quality. Instead, studies the development of PDA-products from the "Wash styrene," but faces uncertainty over the operational, financial and environmental consequences. This case contains evidence to support the quantitative analysis of financial, operational and environmental problems, including some of the major life-cycle analysis ( LCA) calculations aimed at greenhouse gas emissions.
