With businesses being exhorted to become agile and internally connected, this article analyzes the role of the Senior Strategy Director, the executive tasked especially with internal strategy. In particular, it investigates what they do, what unique capabilities they deploy to enable powerful contribution to the firm, and in what ways they assist the connectedness of policy. An analysis of multiple interviews over time with Senior Strategy Directors of large businesses demonstrates the critical and ambitious part these executives play in both formation, connecting up, and carrying out strategy.
This article identifies the special capacities essential for Senior Strategy Directors to perform their role and shows how it depends upon their skillful deployment. These conclusions have significant implications for accepting unfolding micro-processes of strategy in big organizations, for premises about the abilities and capabilities essential to be an effective Senior Strategy Director, and for business schools with regard to the content and style of strategy lessons they provide.
