This article analyzes how Adidas, the sector's No. 2 company, has used a code of labor practice to control the labor standards of its principal production providers. A comparative evaluation of a matched sample of two contractors in China reveals that although the code demands were satisfied in both instances, relationships with Adidas differed but made a difference. Compared with conformity-type relationships, collaborative international business-contractor ties support better employment relations in contractor factories and higher workplace operation.
