In August 1998, Columbia Capital Partners in Arlington, Va., decided whether to raise outside of venture capital investment. Columbia began in 1988 as a boutique investment bank focused on the telecommunications industry, but it had in its history, gradually becoming more involved in making private equity investments, from 1994-98, the company made more than $ 100 million in such investments.
