William Drayton founded Ashoka in 1980, using the model of venture capital to support social entrepreneurs, namely the practical visionaries who strive for social change. The main objective is to identify the Ashoka social entrepreneurs around the world, who then receive grants of Ashoka, which provide financial and professional support. To be selected, each promising guy passes strict search and selection. Fellows receive a stipend (typically 3 years), and they join the Global Fellowship - a worldwide network of social entrepreneurs. Since 1982, more than 1,100 Ashoka Fellows were selected in 41 countries. Ashoka Fellows work in six areas:. Training / education, environment, health, human rights, civic participation and economic development "Hide
