This case investigates recent dynamics of the real estate business from the standpoint of Sussex and Reilly, a Chicago real estate company serving the city market. The case includes changes in the market states of residential real estate; the look and growth of new challengers, many of them national businesses using the Internet; and national tendencies associated with the utilization of the Internet.
From June 2005 to July 2007, the unique interval when the case takes place, was a time of turmoil in terms of technologies, business models, legal problems, and market conditions. While initially the case concentrated on residential real estate on the effects of the Internet, it became more complicated due to the beginning of a very acute disaster compared by abundant to the Great Depression. Established in the year 2000, Sussex and Reilly was a dynamic, youthful firm, providing services to commercial and residential customers in Chicago and developers. In 2006, Sussex and Reilly's residential division employed 250 agents and had four offices in some of the most affluent neighborhoods of Chicago.
