Carrefour China, Building a Greener Store Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

Carrefour, the second major retailer worldwide, had just declared that it would open its first "Green Store" in Beijing before the 2008 Olympic Games. David Monaco, advantage and construction director of Carrefour China, had little experience with green building, and was fighting with how to translate that announcement into specifications for store design and processes. Monaco has to assess the scenario carefully both from economical and environmental standpoints.

Additionally, he must consider the infrastructure and regulatory situation in China into accounts, only few providers of energy saving gear manage and where no official green building standard exists. Energy and price data had already gathered from several providers, and wondered how this could be used to decide among environmental technology options. Given that at least 150 added business stores were scheduled for renovation or opening in China during the next three years, the job would have long term implications for Carrefour.
