Prior to the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, the Chinese were outraged repeated interrupt the Olympic torch relay in Paris on April 7, 2008. Shortly after the incident, the group LVMH, shareholder retailer Carrefour, was accused of some Chinese Internet users to give money to the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader. The rumor spread quickly on the Internet, leading to calls for large-scale boycott of Carrefour on May 1, 2008. Despite the souring public sentiment, Carrefour does not provide a consistent answer to the public, even after a week of the crisis. The situation deteriorated rapidly, demonstrations taking place in various cities throughout China.
