Abstract

Female entrepreneurs have an important role in domestic and international economic scene and they represent a potential for development of the economy. In developed nations, women have special incentives and support for the growth and development of their entrepreneurialcareer. There are policies that protect them from discrimination and inequality. Additionally, there are a variety of organizations and associations which deal with issuesthat arise in women entrepreneurship and provide them with a variety of necessary support. It is sad to note that in less developed nations and those that are undergoing change, the situation differs. Women are not economically engaged to the importance they deserve. Additionally, usually the initiative that they run on the issue of economic, political or cultural barriers either impedes or discourages the development of entrepreneurship among women.

The present study sheds light on female entrepreneurship with focus on Turkey. It is prudent to explore the various factors that impact female entrepreneurship. Such factors include level of education, religion, culture, and educational level, support initiatives from the local and state governments among others. While understanding factors that impact female entrepreneurship is important, a close look at the trend of female entrepreneurship in Turkey and other neighboring countries gives a clear look at the nation. This study will be important for policy makers to determine various steps to be taken to either speed up or initiate female entrepreneurship in Turkey.

Introduction

It is prudent to point out that, without socially and economically empowering women, who make up almost 50% of the global population, there are low prospects of development. Women entrepreneurship is perceived as a crucial means of attaining women empowerment in Turkey (Kagla, 2015). In Turkey alone, there has been a trend of seeing women entrepreneurs actively initiating and managing businesses. Despite the fact that entrepreneurship is a well-acknowledged area of research worldwide, women entrepreneurship is perceived as a crucial aspect of development studies. Turkey is acknowledged as a country that does not embrace gender equality. As stipulated in the World Economic Forum of 2014 Global Gender Gap, it was illustrated that Turkey was ranked among the lowest, at 125 out of 142 (Noyes, 2014). According to the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM), Latin America and the Caribbean women in entrepreneurship population is two to three times higher than in a majority of developed countries in the EU. In Latin America, women’s rate of participation in entrepreneurship is at 24%. This, thus, makes the rate of women participation in entrepreneurship in Turkey to be quite low compared to these nations.....................
