Larry Smarr, founding director of the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology (Calit2), reflects on the past 10 years, the Institute of successes and challenges. In 2010, more than 700 universities, scientists, artists, engineers, social scientists and more than 300 non-university partners to come to the Institute. Innovative and interdisciplinary research projects in various areas, such as environmental monitoring, human / robot communications, digital archeology, nanotechnology, life sciences, information technology and telecommunications. Calit2 was one of four new research initiatives established in 2000 through a partnership between the State of California, the University of California and the California industry to strengthen and maintain the entrepreneurial business growth and expansion of California economy into new industries and markets. Calit2 is the result of the partnership between both the University of California, San Diego and the University of California, Irvine.
